The Big Idea has is a creative initiative for secondary school students where they can work on creative briefs that address real world problems, guided by industry mentors who provide feedback throughout the process. The organisation has grown significantly over the past 4 years, and wanted their refreshed website to reflect their evolving ethos and values.
The Opportunity
The Big Idea team really wanted to foreground interactivity and play, so that the site would be engaging, unexpected, and reflect and encourage the creativity that the student projects address. As a site that caters to a wide variety of different users, including students, teachers, mentors and partners, it was important to distinguish user specific pages to funnel content that would meet each of their specific needs.
The Solution
Using the pre-existing shapes and colors of The Big Idea’s visual identity, we rationalized them into a clear system, which we could then use to create dynamic and playful compositions. Our approach took inspiration from the student projects, layering shapes and images to echo the sketchbook quality of the student’s creative process. We wanted to foreground people’s experiences, so student, teacher and mentor testimonials are integrated using visual sticky notes. An immersive and engaging user experience was further achieved through bold typography, playful information design and encouraging calls to action.
